Stammering on TikTok, miracle cures, and why fluency is not the full story
As part of my research while setting up The Stammer Space, I finally decided to get on board the TikTok train to see what is out there. I created an account under our name, followed a few stammering accounts, and searched for “stammering” and “stuttering” on TikTok.
What made me genuinely happy was seeing so many people who stammer putting themselves out there, doing things that make them uncomfortable, showing the world not only the frustrations but also that living with a stammer is often not as bad as it first seems. I’ll share a few creators worth following at the end.
Stammering content on TikTok
But among the inspiring stammering content, I also saw a different trend, videos promising a cure, fix, or how to stop stammering completely. These kinds of messages can really set people up to fail.
I came across several clips promoting programmes or techniques that claim to stop your stammer if you are absolutely dedicated. Others talked about how they had “overcome stammering” and encouraged others to follow their method.
The focus was almost entirely on fluency and on how “life destroying” a stammer is, while saying very little about the emotional impact of stammering or the hidden side of it.
The reality behind “overcoming” a stammer
One video that stood out was from someone who said he had “overcome” his stammer, but every day was still a constant struggle, slowing down, monitoring every word, and never really relaxing.
For him, fluency meant success, but it came with ongoing effort and pressure.
Are fluency programmes the answer?
It is completely understandable why people turn to miracle cures or strict fluency programmes for stammering. Stammering can be incredibly hard to live with.
And if a particular method genuinely works for someone, that is fantastic, their goals are their own.
But for many, these approaches can lead to disappointment. Stammering is often neurological, it is how the brain is wired, and when the stammer inevitably returns, people can end up blaming themselves. That is not fair, and it is not true.
Rethinking stammering and acceptance
If you have ever tried a fluency programme and felt like you “failed,” it is worth asking, is the stammer a me problem, or is it that society is not accepting of it?
And if a miracle cure did work, what would actually change for you? Would you feel more relaxed about talking? More confident? More social?
At The Stammer Space, we help you explore these questions and focus on what really matters to you, whether that is speech therapy strategies for stammering, CBT approaches to manage the emotional side, or a mix of both.
